Safe leading

Although you may not be leading an equine during a session you may need to lead the horse in order to prepare and position them for the sessions or move them round the yard. In all your interactions with equines ask yourself the following:

• Do I always ask the horse to move forwards with a clear cue or do I expect them to just follow me
• Do I always ask the horse to stop with a clear cue or do I expect them to stop because I have?
• Do I change my expectations for the horse depending on the situation? (Eg. Do I expect him to follow me in from the field because I have put on a headcollar but not expect him to follow me out of the stable when I leave?
• Am I a predictable and consistent handler?
